What Your Child Will Learn at Every Age
Maria tailors every lesson to your child's age, personality, and learning style. Here's what to expect at each stage โ based on her experience teaching children across the Bellevue and Eastside area.
Ages 5โ7
Playful introduction to piano. Focus on hand position, rhythm, simple melodies, and building a love for music. Short, engaging exercises that match young attention spans.
Ages 8โ12
Deepening technique and musicality. Students learn to read music fluently, play classical and contemporary pieces, and develop stage confidence through recital preparation.
Teens
Advanced repertoire, exam preparation (ABRSM/RCM), competition coaching, and college audition support. Teens also explore the music they love โ from classical to film scores.
The Russian Piano School Approach
Maria was trained in the Russian piano school tradition at the Moscow Conservatory โ one of the most respected music institutions in the world. This method emphasizes:
- โ Proper technique from day one โ correct hand position, posture, and finger independence prevent bad habits that are hard to unlearn later
- โ Deep musicality, not just notes โ students learn to understand phrasing, dynamics, and expression, making music truly come alive
- โ Integrated ear training โ developing the ability to hear intervals, harmonies, and melodies by ear alongside reading music
- โ Theory built into every lesson โ no separate "boring theory class," concepts are woven naturally into the pieces students play
- โ Stage confidence through performance โ regular recitals in a supportive environment teach children to perform with poise and joy
This approach produces students who don't just play piano โ they understand music at a deep level and carry that understanding for life.

What age can my child start piano lessons?
We accept children starting at age 5. At this age, most children have the fine motor skills and attention span needed. Maria assesses each child individually during a free trial lesson to determine the best starting point.
How long should a child's piano lesson be?
For children ages 5โ7, we recommend 30-minute lessons. Ages 8โ12 typically do well with 45-minute lessons, and teens benefit most from 60-minute sessions. Maria will recommend the right duration during the trial.
How do I know if my child is making progress?
Maria provides regular updates and sets clear milestones. Students participate in recitals twice a year, which are a wonderful way to see growth. Parents often notice improved focus, discipline, and confidence within the first few months.
Do you prepare children for piano exams and competitions?
Yes! Maria prepares students for ABRSM and Royal Conservatory (RCM) exams, as well as competitions and auditions. Her structured approach ensures students are thoroughly prepared.
Does my child need a piano at home?
Yes โ regular practice is essential. A full-size digital piano with weighted keys is a good starting option. Maria can recommend specific models based on your budget during the trial lesson.
Do you teach kids in Kirkland, Redmond, and nearby areas?
Yes! Maria offers in-home lessons in Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mercer Island, and across the Eastside for an additional travel fee. Online lessons are also available.
